Palermo
Nestling on the protective flank of Monte Pellegrono with Monte Alfano to the east, Palermo lies in a natural amphitheatre called the Conca d’oro (Dolden Shel). Against La Cala harbor, the setting is beautiful and te city, a mix of oriental and European, is without equal despite reduced circumstances. The architecture, ranging in style from Arabic to Norman, baroque and Art Nouveau, is without comparison in Sicily, making this exotic city an exciting place to explore. Squeezed are labyrinthine medieval quarters where ancient buildings with crumbling fabric still survive.
The Mafia
An international organization founded in Sicily, the Mafia (meaning hostility to law) developed against a background of a cruel State, exploitative nobility and severe poverty. By the late 19th century it has become a criminal organization thriving on property speculation and drug trafficking. Since the singing of Tmmaso Buscetta and the capture of Totto Riina, the Mafia has been on the defensive against State that has doubled its efforts against it. Although violence is common, it is not aimed at tourists. Indeed Sicilians on the whole are known for their hospitality.
