Region of Calabria

Calabria has been immortalized in the drawings of Edward Lear who, traveling through on a donkey in 1847, was transfixed by the "horror and magnificence" of its savage landscape. Along with Sicily, Puglia and Basilicata, Calabria was part of Magna Grecia. Later on centuries of rule by Naples led to the marginalization of Calabria. Nowadays Calabria has a terrifying reputation due to the "ndrandheta", the ferocious first cousin to the Mafia whose activities are constant menace.
